DECEMBER 2002

Welcome

This is a web-version of electronic newsletter sent to subscribers. The newsletter is about raising awareness of stuttering in Europe. We hope to send out the newsletter every 1-2 months. The newsletter will focus on stuttering information and the European Year of People with Disabilities (EYPD). The EYPD is a great opportunity for everybody, national stuttering associations and people who stutter (pws), to raise awareness of stuttering. See below for ideas and links.

Firstly some background

On 3 December 2001, the European Union adopted 2003 as the European Year of People with Disabilities. This decision has given an opportunity to disabled people, including pws, across Europe, to put disability rights at the top of the agenda for Europe and the Members States. It is also hoped that the European Year will also be celebrated in the countries of the European Economic Area and the candidate countries for accession to the European Union.

Thousands of activities and events will take place during the year in the different participating countries. They will be linked by a March through Europe which will start in Greece in January 2003 after the opening ceremony in Athens, go through all the Member States of the European Union and will end in Italy in December 2003. Activities and events along the March at all levels in the Member States will be organised by the disability movement. The March will be supported by a campaign bus.

Check out what's going on

Go to the ELSA website, www.elsa.info double click onto the 2003 logo, then click onto your country. You will find a website listing all the events relating to EYPD in your country. If you can register your interest then please do so. The organisers of this website are looking to promote all events connected with disability and that includes STUTTERING. This is FREE publicity for your work and activities paid for by the European Commission - take advantage of it to put stuttering on the agenda. Whatever you are doing in your country let the website know and make personal contact with your local organisers. You can also register your event with the EYPD for further publicity, again double click on the 2003 logo. See also "call for information" further down this newsletter.
